The Oak Park Board of Trustees meeting on July 1, 2025, was marked by a significant recognition ceremony honoring Sergeant Derrick Virge of the Oak Park Police Department. The event celebrated Sergeant Virge's extraordinary bravery, culminating in the presentation of the Police Medal of Valor from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
Chief Shetanya Johnson opened the ceremony, acknowledging the presence of community members, police, and fire department personnel, as well as retired officers. She emphasized the importance of recognizing not only Sergeant Virge's achievements but also honoring the memory of Detective Allen Reddings, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.
Sergeant Virge, a native of Oak Park, has dedicated over 21 years to public service, including roles as a school resource officer and community police officer. His recent promotion to sergeant in August 2023 reflects his commitment to the community and law enforcement.
Chief Pat Kreese, representing the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, detailed the events leading to the award. On November 29, 2024, Sergeant Virge responded to a critical situation involving an armed suspect who had shot Detective Reddings. Demonstrating exceptional courage, he located the shooter and neutralized the threat, preventing further harm to the public and fellow officers.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Police Medal of Valor to Sergeant Virge, recognizing his heroism and dedication to service. The community was invited to celebrate with refreshments and take photographs in honor of the occasion.
