Coconut Grove residents challenge Miami Dade's handling of Playhouse renovation

The Historic Environmental Preservation Board of Miami convened on July 1, 2025, to address several pressing issues regarding local historic preservation efforts. The meeting began with discussions surrounding the state-mandated review process for state-owned properties, specifically the 267 review. Board members expressed uncertainty about the process, with one member suggesting that the board should inquire with the state regarding the completion of this review.

Following this, Glorianna Calhoun, a resident of Coconut Grove, presented concerns about the Coconut Grove Playhouse. She submitted letters from Florida House Representative Fabian Basabe, asserting that Miami-Dade County has failed to uphold its contractual obligations to preserve the theater. Calhoun highlighted that the historic facade of the playhouse is suffering damage and criticized the ongoing demolition efforts as a "calculated erasure" of the cultural landmark. She emphasized that the community deserves accountability for the preservation of such significant sites.

Anthony Vinciguerra, another community member, took the opportunity to thank board member Mister Kalmus for his assistance with technology at previous meetings. He also noted that the board had requested recommendations for Neighborhood Conservation District 2 (NCD2) and expressed hope that these would be presented at the upcoming September meeting.

The meeting underscored the community's commitment to preserving Miami's historic sites and the ongoing dialogue between residents and board members regarding the future of these cultural landmarks.
