The Oak Grove City Council meeting on June 30, 2025, featured a significant update from school board member Annette West, who provided insights into the achievements and developments within the St. Francis Area Schools district.
West reported that the district's total student enrollment for the 2024-2025 academic year reached 4,312 students, encompassing grades K through 12. Notably, the graduation rate for the class of 2024 was an impressive 94.2%, marking the highest rate in five years and exceeding the state average by 11%. The class of 2025 celebrated 310 graduates during dual ceremonies held from May 29 to May 30.
The meeting highlighted various academic accomplishments, including 28 highest honor graduates and 34 honor students from the class of 2025. Additionally, 22 students were recognized as members of the National Honor Society, with one student logging over 100 volunteer hours.
West also discussed the implementation of new curricula, including social studies for grades 6-12 and science for grades 9-12, aligning with Minnesota state standards. A new initiative, the Minnesota Bilingual Seals Program, was launched, allowing students who learn two or more languages to earn college credits. Ten students participated in this program during the 2024-2025 school year.
Innovative projects were showcased, such as a student-led entrepreneurial initiative at the middle school, reminiscent of the television show "Shark Tank," where eighth graders presented their inventions to a panel. The district also celebrated achievements in various extracurricular activities, including DECA, where competitor Jack Humphrey advanced to the international level, and multiple state qualifiers in sports and performing arts.
Recognition was given to outstanding staff members, including Ted Gehring, who was nominated for the 2025 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, and Heidi Critchley, who received the Central Division Middle School Principal of the Year award. Additionally, bus driver Beth Chaney was honored for her life-saving actions following a car accident.
The meeting concluded with the announcement that St. Francis Area Schools received a prestigious certificate of excellence in financial reporting, underscoring the district's commitment to transparency and high standards in financial management. This recognition is a significant achievement for the district, reflecting its dedication to quality education and responsible governance.
