With a background spanning 26 years in the Postal Service, Damon has served in various states, including Oklahoma, Texas, and now Washington. He expressed enthusiasm for providing essential services to the Tacoma community and fostering a positive work environment for employees.
Damon oversees a significant operation in Tacoma, managing over 200 delivery routes and 13 retail units, which collectively serve more than 200,000 delivery points across Tacoma and surrounding areas like Parkland and Lakewood. The Tacoma Postal Service operates with an annual budget of approximately $54 million and employs around 540 staff members.
During the discussion, Damon highlighted some of the challenges he encounters, including mail flow issues, customer service concerns, and employee management. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the commitment to delivering excellent customer service and continuous improvement.
In addition to operational insights, Damon shared a remarkable story from his career about a clerk in Texas who had not taken a sick day since the Reagan administration, showcasing the dedication found within the Postal Service. He also discussed the importance of dog bite awareness, particularly during the designated awareness month. He explained the training that mail carriers undergo to stay safe from dog bites, including carrying protective equipment and utilizing technology to alert them of known dog locations.
