The Massachusetts Legislature held a formal house session on June 30, 2025, where members paid tribute to the late Frederick Pat Waller, a 101-year-old World War II veteran and longtime farmer from Dracut. The session began with a moment of silence requested by Miss Gary of Dracut in honor of Waller, who passed away peacefully on June 27.
Waller's military service began when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 10, 1943. He served in Europe as part of Company D of the 39th Infantry Regiment, landing at Utah Beach shortly after D-Day. His bravery in combat earned him several accolades, including a Purple Heart, which he received on his 20th birthday after being wounded, as well as a Bronze Star and various campaign medals.
After returning from the war, Waller married Eleanor and established a farm in Dracut, where he lived until his passing. He was remembered fondly by many in the chamber, having been honored at the inaugural Military Appreciation Day on May 22, where he demonstrated his determination by standing to acknowledge his recognition despite using a wheelchair.
Waller is survived by his three daughters, Sandra, Patricia, and Mary, along with his son Joseph, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. His legacy as a dedicated veteran and community member will be cherished by those who knew him.
