A retroactive emergency resolution was passed by the Mineola Board of Education to address urgent repairs at Jackson Elementary School, following significant roof damage discovered on September 5. The roof's membrane had delaminated, creating a risk of further damage and safety hazards due to potential wind exposure.
Will Herb, a board member, explained that the emergency repair was conducted by Moore Consulting, the same contractor involved in a recent high school project. The board's swift action allowed for immediate repairs without the usual public approval process, which is typically required for capital work. An insurance claim has been submitted to the New York State Insurance Reciprocal, but the reimbursement details are still pending as the insurance company reviews the situation.
In addition to the emergency resolution, the board approved several appointments, including 22 new coaches and a probationary special education teacher, Alyssa Theophanes, at the middle school. Megan Adams was also appointed as the school psychologist at Jackson and will serve as the district's CSE subcommittee chairperson for the remainder of the school year.
The meeting highlighted the district's commitment to maintaining safe learning environments and fostering educational excellence, as evidenced by a recent visit from a team of educators from Iowa who were impressed by the district's innovative teaching methods and social-emotional learning initiatives.
