During the recent Pasadena Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees meeting, the spotlight was on the Early College High School (ECHS) program, which has seen remarkable growth and success. Karen McCarley, the director of counseling and college readiness, presented an overview of the program, highlighting its mission to provide students, particularly those from historically underrepresented backgrounds, with the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and college credits at no cost.

The ECHS program has expanded significantly since its inception, with enrollment set to reach 2,480 students this fall, marking the largest cohort to date. The program's unique "school within a school" model allows students to remain connected to their high school while pursuing college-level coursework, fostering essential life skills such as persistence and self-advocacy.

McCarley reported that the class of 2025 achieved an impressive 84% associate degree completion rate, with many students graduating from San Jacinto College just weeks before their high school graduation. This achievement underscores the program's effectiveness in preparing students for post-secondary education without incurring college debt.

The presentation also recognized the accomplishments of various campuses within the ECHS program. Notably, Pasadena Early College has produced alumni who have returned to serve their community in various professional roles, including educators and healthcare workers. The program has also been acknowledged as a Texas Education Agency (TEA) demonstration site, reflecting its exemplary practices.

In addition to academic achievements, the ECHS program emphasizes community engagement, with students participating in activities that promote mental health awareness and leadership skills. The board members were commended for their ongoing support, which has been crucial in providing these transformative opportunities for students.
