DeKalb County officials have approved a significant funding initiative aimed at enhancing local traffic infrastructure during the PWI Committee Meeting held on June 26, 2025. The committee accepted a reimbursement of $27,378 from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for traffic signal equipment relocations and damages incurred from accidents. This funding is crucial for maintaining safe and efficient traffic management across all commission districts.

In addition to the reimbursement, the committee also celebrated the acceptance of a substantial grant totaling $5,348,394.69 from GDOT for the fiscal year 2025. This grant, which does not require a local match, will be allocated for various projects, including upgrades to school flashers and traffic signals, sidewalk repairs, and road markings. The funding is particularly vital as it allows the county to address infrastructure needs that often exceed the limits of the operating budget.

Director Rick Lehi highlighted the importance of this supplemental grant, noting that it will help the county comply with new federal requirements for audible pedestrian signals and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The grant will support improvements at approximately 320 traffic signal locations, enhancing safety and accessibility for all residents.

Commissioners expressed their enthusiasm for the projects, with discussions focusing on the flexibility of the grant to accommodate community suggestions as the bidding process unfolds.
