Residents of Carlsbad are set to see improvements in traffic safety as the city’s transportation department actively addresses speeding concerns and enhances pedestrian safety measures. During a recent meeting of the Special Senior Commission, community members voiced their frustrations and successes regarding traffic calming initiatives in various neighborhoods.

One resident highlighted the ongoing issue of speeding on Daisy Avenue, which he dubbed the "Indianapolis Speedway." Despite the installation of speed humps, he reported that drivers continue to exceed safe speeds, creating a dangerous environment. The transportation department responded by offering to evaluate the situation further and explore additional traffic calming measures.

Conversely, another resident praised the successful traffic calming efforts on Tamarack Avenue, where speed bumps and a new crossing signal have significantly reduced vehicle speeds. This resident noted a dramatic improvement in safety, particularly for children attending nearby schools.

The transportation department also outlined its commitment to maintaining clear roadway striping and improving accessibility for pedestrians. Plans include the installation of creative crosswalks near parks and schools, which aim to enhance both safety and community aesthetics. Additionally, the department is working on a Safe Routes to School Plan for Sage Creek High School, set to be presented to the city council later this month.

As the city continues to prioritize traffic safety and pedestrian accessibility, residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming discussions and provide feedback on proposed improvements.
