In a recent meeting of the St. Augustine Corridor Review Committee, plans for a new archives building dedicated to the archaeology department took center stage. Currently housed in a facility that is in dire need of upgrades, the department is poised to move to a new location on King Street, which promises to enhance both functionality and community engagement.

The proposed building is designed to be more than just a storage space for archaeological materials. It will feature public-facing meeting rooms and community spaces, allowing local residents to utilize the facility for neighborhood meetings and events. This dual purpose aims to foster a sense of community while providing essential resources for the archaeology department.

The layout of the building includes a well-thought-out entryway, restrooms, and a small kitchen to support gatherings. The rear section of the building will be dedicated to archival storage, specifically designed to meet stringent temperature and humidity controls necessary for preserving archaeological finds. This specialized storage area will not have windows, ensuring optimal conditions for the materials housed within.
