Mayor Whitmire recently announced a significant boost for Houston's disaster recovery efforts, following a visit from U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner. The federal agency has allocated $314 million in grant funds to the city, aimed at enhancing community development and resilience.

A substantial portion of this funding, $151 million, will be directed towards the city's power protection initiative, spearheaded by Chief Recovery and Resilience Officer Angela Blanchard. This initiative is designed to improve the reliability of essential services by installing backup generators at over 100 strategic locations, including police and fire stations, libraries, and multi-service centers. Mayor Whitmire emphasized the importance of local knowledge in rebuilding efforts, stating that residents understand their needs better than distant bureaucrats.

In addition to power protection, some of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds will also be allocated to tackle homelessness and support home repairs in the aftermath of disasters. Following the funding announcement, Mayor Whitmire and Secretary Turner toured the Harris Center, focusing on the pressing issue of homelessness in Houston.
