Clarksville prepares for liquor store compliance lottery process

Clarksville City Council has taken significant steps to reshape the local retail liquor landscape, paving the way for increased competition and accessibility. During a special session on June 26, 2025, city officials discussed the recent amendments to the liquor store regulations, which will allow for a total of 27 liquor stores in the city, a notable increase from previous limits.

The council's decision stems from an ordinance passed in November 2024, which lifted the cap on the number of liquor stores based on the latest census data. Previously, the city allowed one liquor store for every 6,000 residents, but the new regulations align with the population growth, enabling more establishments to operate within the community.

Key provisions of the updated regulations include a stipulation that no liquor store can be located within 500 feet of schools, parks, or religious institutions, and a minimum distance of 1,500 feet must be maintained between liquor stores. Additionally, to streamline the application process, a $250 fee has been introduced for each liquor store application, addressing the administrative burden on the city clerk's office.

City Clerk Lisa Canfield outlined the application process, which began with a public notice on May 1 and ran through May 27. Following a thorough review, 66 applications were deemed complete and are now set to enter a lottery system for selection. The lottery will take place on Tuesday, where 11 names will be drawn from a pool of applicants, ensuring a fair process for those vying for a liquor store license.

This initiative is expected to enhance consumer choice and stimulate local economic growth, as new liquor stores will contribute to the city's retail diversity. As the lottery approaches, the community eagerly anticipates the potential changes in the local market, marking a new chapter in Clarksville's retail landscape.
