The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance (ILEA) meeting on June 25, 2025, opened with a structured public comment session, allowing community members to voice their concerns and insights regarding local education. Martha Cortes, Chief Partnerships Officer at Kipinde Public Schools, was among the first to address the alliance. She highlighted the challenges faced by the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood, where her charter school operates. With a student body that is predominantly Black and Latinx, and a significant percentage qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Cortes underscored the socio-economic hurdles impacting education in the area. She noted that the neighborhood has seen over two dozen school closures in the past 30 years, which has destabilized public education and affected community vibrancy.

Cortes praised the long-standing partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), which has enabled Kipinde to provide quality education to over 80% of local students. This collaboration is seen as a vital asset in addressing the educational needs of the community, particularly in a region that has faced significant educational disruptions.

The meeting also included guidelines for public comments, stressing the importance of staying on topic and maintaining decorum. Comments submitted online prior to the meeting were shared with alliance members, ensuring that community feedback is considered in ongoing discussions.

As the ILEA continues to engage with local residents, the focus remains on fostering partnerships and addressing the educational challenges that directly impact the lives of students and families in Indianapolis.
