The City Council of Indianapolis has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing road safety through its Vision Zero Task Force during a meeting on June 25, 2025. This initiative is designed to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by implementing a series of strategic actions and community engagement efforts.

The task force presented approximately 25 strategies accompanied by 75 action items, focusing on the "safe system" approach, which emphasizes safe people, safe speeds, and safe roads. Key components of the plan include the development of a dedicated Vision Zero website featuring dashboards and crash maps, as well as an annual report to track progress and performance indicators.

One of the primary strategies involves prioritizing safety improvements at high-risk locations, particularly around transit stops. The council plans to implement quick-build programs to pilot traffic safety interventions in areas identified as high injury networks. This data-driven approach aims to ensure that infrastructure improvements are targeted where they are most needed.

To promote safe driving behaviors, the task force will launch a Vision Zero awareness campaign that includes educational materials in multiple languages and community engagement initiatives. Additionally, adjustments to traffic court policies are proposed to discourage speeding and distracted driving, with stricter penalties for repeat offenders.

The plan also addresses post-crash care, emphasizing the importance of timely emergency medical response and collaboration with health departments to enhance survivability in traffic incidents. Furthermore, the city aims to update its fleet policies to ensure that city vehicles are equipped with safety features that minimize crash impacts.

Public feedback is encouraged, with a comment period open until July 1, allowing residents to engage with the proposed strategies. The Vision Zero Task Force is committed to transparency and collaboration, ensuring that community voices are heard as the city moves forward with these critical safety initiatives.
