Janae Cottrell, Director of Aging and Adult Services, echoed these sentiments, stating that elder abuse is a hidden issue with significant health, legal, and social implications. Recent assessments revealed heightened concerns among older adults, particularly those from low-income and minority backgrounds, regarding financial scams and crimes. Cottrell stressed that awareness is the first step in addressing this complex problem, especially in Marin, where 30% of the population is aged 60 and older.

The meeting also featured discussions on a public information campaign titled "Stop Elder Abuse Marin," which aims to educate the community about the different types of elder abuse and how to report it. This campaign utilizes various media strategies to reach older adults, particularly in areas where they frequent, such as senior centers and grocery stores.

Several speakers highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding elder abuse, with estimates suggesting that one in ten older adults will experience some form of abuse annually. In Marin County alone, approximately 2,600 reports of elder abuse were received last year, with financial exploitation being a significant concern.

Community members, including representatives from the Financial Abuse Specialist Team, shared personal stories and insights on the importance of vigilance and support for vulnerable populations. They urged residents to be proactive in identifying and reporting suspected abuse, reinforcing the message that everyone has a role to play in protecting older adults.
