The South Kingstown School Committee held a Zoom meeting on June 25, 2025, to discuss various administrative updates and the transition of Wakefield Elementary School to town control. The meeting began with the announcement of two leaves of absence as the school year concluded. The committee expressed gratitude to Amy Hubertus, the vice principal of Peasdale Elementary, for her service as she prepares to leave the district.

The committee also welcomed back Ann Marie Donnell as a school social worker and introduced Jessica Dummack, who will be joining the staff at West Kingston.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on the status of Wakefield Elementary School. Interim Facilities Director John Gould reported that the building has been cleared of district property, with only a few items remaining to be sold. The committee acknowledged the efforts of town Facilities Superintendent Mark Russo and former Finance Director Ryan Kilpatrick in facilitating this process.

Superintendent Joseph Da Silva confirmed that all necessary notifications regarding the school’s closure had been properly communicated to surrounding communities. The committee is now preparing for the final walkthroughs of the school to ensure all valuable items are accounted for before transferring control of the building to the town.

The committee anticipates that a motion to officially transfer care, custody, and control of Wakefield Elementary to the town will be made at the next meeting. This transition is expected to shift financial responsibilities for the building's maintenance from the school district to the town, pending town council acceptance.

The meeting concluded with a discussion about a time capsule buried in November 1975, which is also part of the transition process. The committee expressed appreciation for the efforts made to clear the school and prepare for its handover to the town.
