A major traffic overhaul is on the horizon for Clay County, as officials discuss the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) ambitious project to revamp the intersection of Wells Road and Blanding Boulevard. This initiative aims to tackle significant congestion issues, with an estimated 125,000 to 140,000 vehicles passing through daily.

The project, which is set to change how drivers access properties in the area, will eliminate certain median openings and require northbound travelers on Blanding Boulevard to make U-turns to enter properties. This redesign is expected to enhance traffic flow and improve safety at one of the county's busiest intersections.

A public meeting is scheduled for July 30 at the Orange Park Library, where residents and business owners are encouraged to attend to learn more about the changes and voice their concerns. Last year, attendance was low, with only one other attendee expressing interest, highlighting the need for greater community engagement on this critical issue.

In addition to the Wells Road project, updates were provided on other transportation initiatives, including the ongoing bridge replacement on County Road 220, which is currently 30% complete and on schedule. A full closure of County Road 220 is planned for July 11 to facilitate the installation of new drainage pipes.

As the county prepares for these significant changes, officials are working diligently to ensure that all projects are completed before the school year begins, aiming to minimize disruptions for families and commuters alike.
