During the recent Derby City Council meeting on June 24, 2025, the spotlight was on Firefighter Lauren Farley, who was honored as the Firefighter of the Year. Fire Chief John Turner introduced Farley, highlighting his exceptional bravery and skill during a critical incident earlier this year.

In February, Farley responded to a house fire in Hayesville, where he faced one of the most intense situations of his career. Amidst battling the blaze in extreme heat, a fellow firefighter, Ty Boff, collapsed due to a cardiac arrest. Farley, the only medic on the scene, quickly shifted from firefighting duties to provide life-saving care. Despite his efforts, Boff unfortunately did not survive after being transported to the hospital.

Chief Turner emphasized the importance of recognizing outstanding service within the fire department, noting that Farley’s actions exemplified the dedication and courage expected of firefighters. The recognition was not only a local honor; Farley also received accolades at the state and national levels, underscoring his significant contributions to the community and the firefighting profession.
