In a recent information session held by DC Public Schools (DCPS) on August 22, 2024, educators and administrators outlined key initiatives for the upcoming school year aimed at enhancing student learning and engagement. The meeting emphasized the importance of improving math outcomes and expanding access to enriching educational opportunities, particularly in STEM fields.

A central focus of the session was the initiative to boost math proficiency among students. Educators highlighted the use of three primary math curricula: Building Blocks for early childhood, Eureka Math for grades K-5, and Illustrative Mathematics for secondary education. Parents were encouraged to engage with these curricula by accessing parent overviews and instructional videos available through the DCPS Parent University. Additionally, blended learning platforms such as iReady, Zearn, and Delta Math were introduced as tools for students to practice essential math skills, with a call for parental support in encouraging students to meet their learning goals.

The session also showcased various enrichment opportunities available to students, particularly through Advanced Placement (AP) courses. All DCPS high schools offer AP classes, which allow students to earn college credit upon successful completion of exams. The meeting underscored the increasing enrollment and success rates in AP courses, with specific recommendations for first-time AP students to consider courses like AP African American Studies and AP Computer Science Principles.

Global Studies programs were another highlight, with opportunities for students to participate in study abroad experiences fully funded by DCPS. Deputy Chancellor of Social Emotional Academic Development, Dr. Juana Bey, concluded the session by discussing the empowered learning initiative, which aims to equip students with essential technology skills. DCPS has implemented a one-to-one device ratio for students in grades 3-12 and a three-to-one ratio for younger students, ensuring that technology is integrated into daily learning. The importance of digital citizenship was also emphasized, with resources available for families to support students in navigating technology responsibly.
