Concerns over noise levels from a proposed translucent wall at a local mosque took center stage during the Clifton Planning Board meeting on May 22, 2025. Residents voiced their worries about potential disturbances, particularly during late-night gatherings.
Gladys Feimster, a resident living adjacent to the mosque, raised her concerns directly to the board. "I cannot sleep all night because everybody's out there," she explained, referencing the congregation's activities during Ramadan. Feimster questioned whether the new wall design would exacerbate noise levels, especially given her proximity to the mosque.
In response, a representative clarified that the translucent wall panels are designed to minimize sound transmission. "There’s a void between the two panels, which helps reduce noise," they explained, emphasizing that the structure would not amplify sound. However, Feimster pressed further, asking if outdoor speakers would be installed. The representative confirmed that no new outdoor speakers would be added, addressing one of the community's primary concerns.
The discussion highlighted the ongoing balance between accommodating the mosque's congregation and addressing the needs of nearby residents. As the planning process continues, the board will need to consider these community concerns to ensure a harmonious coexistence.
