Bend's Riverfront Street design project is set to enhance connectivity along the Deschutes River Trail, addressing long-standing infrastructure issues. During the Bend MPO Policy Board meeting on June 20, 2025, project lead Brad Tower provided an update on the initiative, which aims to complete one of the last gaps in the trail while improving road conditions and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project, which runs from Millard's Landing to Galveston Avenue, has been awarded funding through a combination of city resources and grants. The design phase is currently underway, with a focus on creating a 10-foot-wide multi-use path, improving stormwater management, and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the area. The city of Bend and Bend Parks and Recreation have partnered to share design costs equally, reflecting a collaborative approach to community development.

Public engagement has been a key component of the project, with early feedback indicating a strong preference for a one-way street design. Approximately 85% of respondents favored this option, which is expected to preserve existing landscaping and reduce cut-through traffic. The design aims to maintain a quaint feel along Riverfront Street while ensuring safety for all users.

However, challenges remain, particularly regarding stormwater treatment solutions due to the high groundwater table near the river. The project team is exploring mechanical solutions to address these concerns, with the goal of achieving a functional design that meets environmental standards.

As the project progresses towards a 30% design completion, the team is optimistic about securing additional funding for construction, which is anticipated to be in the single-digit millions. The next steps will involve engaging with utility providers and refining the design based on community input and technical requirements.

This initiative not only aims to improve infrastructure but also to enhance the recreational experience along the Deschutes River, making it a significant step forward for Bend's urban development and community connectivity.
