Kossuth County is poised to enhance its infrastructure following a recent decision by the Board of Supervisors to pursue federal funding for bridge projects. During the meeting on June 17, 2025, it was announced that two out of three bridges submitted for a competitive highway bridge program grant have made the final list, potentially unlocking $1.5 million per project.

The competitive highway bridge program, which has a total funding pool of $32.5 million available to the state, aims to cover 80% of project costs with federal dollars. Kossuth County's commitment to these projects is a significant step toward improving local infrastructure, as the bridges in question are aging and require attention. One bridge, built in 1951, and another from 1973, have been identified for replacement due to their deteriorating conditions.

In addition to the bridge funding, the board discussed staffing changes within the engineering office. A local engineer, who has been with the county since 2017, is set to be promoted to a transportation engineer position, aligning with the county's budgetary plans. The board is also in the process of hiring a technician or engineering aide to support ongoing projects.

The meeting also addressed ongoing issues with a junkyard in the county, where debris has encroached upon roadways. The landowner has been served legal papers, and there are indications of progress as cleanup efforts begin.

As Kossuth County moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on leveraging federal funds to enhance infrastructure and address community concerns. The board is expected to review equipment quotes and finalize decisions on the bridge projects in the coming weeks, ensuring that the county remains proactive in its development efforts.
