Milwaukee County is set to enhance community resources with a new senior center planned for McGovern Park, following a recent government meeting that outlined the project's key details and community feedback. The proposal aims to replace the existing senior center, which has faced deferred maintenance issues, with a modern facility designed to improve accessibility and safety within the park.

During the meeting, Guy Smith, Executive Director of Milwaukee County Parks, emphasized the importance of integrating the new center into the park's environment while addressing community concerns. Residents expressed worries about safety, property management, cleanliness, and environmental impact. However, a door-to-door canvassing effort revealed that 48% of the 39 residents surveyed supported the project, indicating a positive community sentiment towards the development.

The new senior center will occupy approximately 5.5 acres in the southeast corner of McGovern Park, strategically chosen to minimize disruption to green space. The design will prioritize sustainability, with oversight from Milwaukee County Parks and Architecture and Engineering to ensure that the facility aligns with the county's sustainable building standards.

A significant aspect of the project is the shift of maintenance responsibilities from Milwaukee County to the Jewish Family Services (JFS), which will manage the new center. This change is expected to enhance operational efficiency and ensure that the facility meets community needs effectively.

The project will also include park-like amenities, such as walking paths and seating areas, to foster engagement and use of the park. The existing senior center will be removed upon completion of the new facility, further improving access to the lagoon and enhancing the natural setting of McGovern Park.
