Washington State clarifies ebike regulations and age requirements for riders

Under the bright lights of North Bend's city hall, council members gathered to discuss pressing community issues, including the growing popularity of electric bikes, or ebikes. One council member shared insights from recent research, highlighting the different classes of ebikes and their respective rules. In Washington state, ebikes are generally permitted on most roads and bike lanes, but restrictions vary based on the class of the bike and the type of path. Class 1 and Class 2 ebikes, which can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour, are accessible to riders of any age. However, Class 3 ebikes, capable of speeds up to 28 miles per hour, require riders to be at least 16 years old. Notably, there are no licensing or insurance requirements for ebikes, but they must adhere to the same traffic rules as traditional bicycles.

The discussion also touched on safety concerns, particularly regarding the potential for injuries among pedestrians and drivers, as well as young riders. Helmets are mandatory for all riders, and those under 18 must complete a motorcycle safety course if they wish to operate street-legal motorcycles.

In addition to ebike regulations, the council announced that the Snoqualmie Valley Little League will host all-star tournaments at Torgersen Park starting June 28, drawing young athletes and families from across the district.
