A proposed retail bakery in Elkhorn is stirring up significant debate, as city officials express strong opposition to a nearby slaughterhouse and meat market. During a recent Walworth County Zoning Agency meeting, city administrator Adam Swan outlined the council's resolution against the construction, citing concerns over noise, odor, and increased traffic on local roads.

Swan emphasized that the city supports farming but believes the proposed location is unsuitable for such a facility. He highlighted that the development could jeopardize a potential housing project by Belinsky Homes, which aims to build 42 attainable homes nearby. This concern aligns with ongoing efforts by the county to promote workforce housing, as noted in a resolution passed earlier this year.

Public works director Matt Lindstrom echoed these sentiments, raising issues about the road infrastructure's ability to handle heavy truck traffic and the potential for parking overflow onto Voss Road, which the city maintains. He also pointed out that the proposed entrances to the site do not meet city standards, further complicating the situation.

The city council's resolution urges the county zoning agency to deny the conditional use permit and rezoning application, stressing the need for a location that serves the best interests of the community. As discussions continue, the future of both the bakery and the meat market remains uncertain, with local leaders advocating for developments that prioritize residential needs and infrastructure capabilities.
