Stafford City Council has taken significant steps to enhance animal welfare in the community through a new partnership with the Houston Humane Society (HHS). During the council meeting on June 18, 2025, Mayor Scott McErath provided an update on the collaboration, which began on May 22, 2025. This partnership aims to improve animal control services and increase the chances of adoption for pets in Stafford.

Since the agreement's inception, the city has successfully transferred 14 animals to HHS, resulting in four adoptions. The partnership not only facilitates adoptions but also includes a comprehensive care program for the animals, which involves medical evaluations and behavioral assessments. HHS has reported a live release rate of 95% for the year to date, indicating a strong commitment to finding homes for the animals.

The council discussed the importance of educating the community about the services provided by HHS, including a trap-neuter-return program for feral cats, which costs $80 per service. This initiative aims to manage the feral cat population effectively while ensuring their well-being.

In addition to the immediate benefits for Stafford's animals, the partnership is seen as a proactive approach to addressing the broader issue of pet homelessness in the Houston area. HHS representatives emphasized their mission to provide high-quality care and find suitable homes for every animal that enters their facility.
