Wilmington City Council honors Jumpstart for affordable housing initiatives

During the recent Wilmington City Council meeting, a significant recognition was given to Jumpstart Wilmington, a local program dedicated to fostering community development and affordable housing. Councilwoman Xanthia Oliver sponsored a resolution honoring Jumpstart for its impactful contributions since its inception in October 2020.

Jumpstart Wilmington was established to help local residents overcome barriers in property development and to promote neighborhood revitalization. The program has successfully enrolled over 200 participants, with 177 graduates who have gained valuable skills in real estate development. Notably, the program collaborates with various Wilmington organizations, including the City of Wilmington Department of Real Estate and Housing, to create affordable housing opportunities.

As part of its efforts, the City Council approved the transfer of seven properties to Jumpstart graduates, enabling them to rehabilitate these sites for affordable rentals and homeownership. With a budget of $6.8 million in lending funds, Jumpstart has facilitated the acquisition of 28 units, with plans for 25 of these to be dedicated to low and moderate-income families.
