The Ellensburg City Council held a study session on June 16, 2025, focusing on fostering trust and belonging within the community. The meeting aimed to facilitate open and honest discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Ellensburg.
Commissioner Holford opened the session by emphasizing the importance of authentic conversations that encourage community members to feel included and supported. The session was structured to include background information, educational content, and a call for community support.
Lindsay, the chair of the DEI commission, provided context on the commission's formation. She noted that discussions began in 2020, sparked by community concerns about harassment and discrimination, which intensified following the murder of George Floyd. The council authorized the formation of a subcommittee to explore the experiences of marginalized communities in Ellensburg.
The commission conducted a "listening tour" over the summer, engaging with 17 different groups and over 100 individuals. The goal was to listen to their experiences without engaging in debate. This effort resulted in extensive feedback, which culminated in a report recommending the establishment of a DEI commission to ensure ongoing support for these initiatives.
The report, which includes around 30 recommendations, was accepted by the council and is available for public viewing on the DEI commission's webpage. The establishment of the DEI commission is seen as a crucial step in addressing the community's needs and fostering a more inclusive environment in Ellensburg.
