Oakdale City Council approves $277K renovation for Brennan Park basketball and futsal courts

Oakdale City Council has approved a significant project aimed at revitalizing Brennan Park, enhancing community recreational facilities with a total budget of $277,069. During the June 16, 2025, meeting, council members authorized the city manager to enter agreements with several contractors for the repair and resurfacing of the park's basketball court, which will also accommodate futsal, a variant of soccer.

The project includes a $114,660 contract with Vintage Contractors for court repairs, $88,708 for new lighting from Modesto Executive Electric, and $38,701 for fencing improvements from Stockton Fence. A contingency fund of $35,000 has also been set aside to address any unforeseen expenses.

Brennan Park, located at 349 South Sixth Avenue, spans approximately 2.8 acres and has been primarily used for basketball. The existing court surface is in poor condition, prompting the need for repairs. The park previously featured a playground, which was removed in 2024 due to vandalism. The new site plan aims to support the growing interest in futsal within the community, providing a dedicated space for both basketball and futsal activities.

The enhancements will include a specialized slip sheet overlay to prevent further cracking of the court surface, new acrylic athletic surfacing, and improved fencing with access gates. Additionally, four new light poles will be installed to ensure the courts can be used safely at night.

City staff expressed optimism about the project timeline, estimating that work could begin within 90 days, ideally completing before the fall season. This initiative not only aims to improve recreational opportunities but also to foster community engagement, as the park has been underutilized in the past.

The council also addressed concerns from local contractors about bidding opportunities for city projects, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accessibility in the bidding process. The city plans to consistently post project bids on its website and social media to ensure local contractors are informed and can participate.
