In a vibrant display of academic achievement and community pride, the Los Angeles City Council welcomed the North Hollywood High School Science Bowl team to the council chambers on May 30, 2025. The students were honored for their remarkable performance at the National Science Bowl competition, where they secured a prestigious place among the nation’s top teams. This year’s event, held in Washington, D.C., showcased the talents of students from across the country, with North Hollywood High standing out against 65 other regional teams.
Council member Nazarian opened the meeting with heartfelt congratulations, emphasizing the school's impressive track record, having previously won the championship in 2001 and 2021. He praised the students for their dedication, teamwork, and perseverance, qualities that not only highlight their academic prowess but also underscore the importance of STEM education in shaping future innovators.
The celebration continued with remarks from Janice Quinones, CEO of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), which has sponsored the Science Bowl since its inception in 1993. Quinones expressed pride in the students, noting their unique composition—comprised entirely of underclassmen—indicating a promising future for the team. She highlighted the critical role of community support and mentorship in fostering such talent.
Principal Ricardo Rosales and coach Alter Main also took the stage, sharing insights into the culture of excellence at North Hollywood High. Rosales reflected on the school's consistent success in the Science Bowl, attributing it to the hard work of students, supportive parents, and dedicated coaching. Main echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the program's importance in providing an outlet for gifted students to thrive.
The students themselves took the opportunity to express their gratitude. Co-captains Suzuko Oshima and Connor Zhao spoke passionately about their experiences, crediting the Science Bowl with igniting their passion for science and opening doors for their future careers. They acknowledged the support of their teammates, coaches, and families, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that defines their success.
