A recent community initiative in Cochise County is making a significant impact by providing handmade blankets to children in crisis through Project Linus. This organization, which operates in all 50 states, has created over a million blankets, each crafted with care by volunteers.
The effort in Sierra Vista began when local resident Lori connected with Renny from Project Linus in Tucson, expressing a desire to help. Initially, the group met in small settings, limiting their ability to produce blankets. However, a partnership with the Sierra Vista Salvation Army opened the doors to a larger community center, allowing for greater participation and production.
Since April 2024, the initiative has gained momentum, with attendance at blanket-making events growing significantly. In January, nearly 50 volunteers came together, resulting in over 80 blankets created in just one session. Participants ranged from young scouts to seniors, showcasing a diverse community spirit. The events not only produce blankets but also foster connections among residents, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
The success of this initiative highlights the power of community engagement and the importance of supporting children in need. As the project continues to grow, it reflects a commitment to addressing local challenges through collective action and compassion. The Sierra Vista community is encouraged to join in these efforts, as every contribution helps make a difference in the lives of children facing difficult circumstances.
