Queen Creek's Planning and Zoning Commission has taken a significant step towards supporting local agricultural activities by approving a conditional use permit for D and D Mini Ranch to host stock dog trials. This decision, made during the June 12, 2025, meeting, allows the ranch to exceed the standard zoning restrictions on animal units and conduct up to six events annually from November to March.

The ranch, which specializes in breeding Saint Croix sheep, has been operating stock dog trials without the necessary permit, prompting a complaint that led to an investigation by the town's code enforcement team. Upon discovering the oversight, the ranch owners promptly sought compliance, demonstrating their commitment to rectifying the situation.

The approved events will typically attract 30 to 40 participants, including competitors, spectators, and judges, and will be held during daylight hours to minimize disturbances. The ranch has also addressed community concerns regarding dust and noise by implementing measures such as planting bamboo to serve as a visual and dust barrier, and applying a soil stabilizer to reduce dust emissions.

Community feedback has been largely positive, with a neighborhood meeting drawing around 35 attendees, and only one letter of opposition received. The ranch owners have actively engaged with neighbors to discuss their operations and address any concerns, particularly regarding the management of livestock and environmental impacts.

The commission's approval not only supports local agricultural practices but also fosters community engagement through these events, which showcase the skills of working dogs in a controlled and respectful manner.
