Mayor Michelle J. Gomez emphasized the importance of recognizing the vibrant culture and heritage shared by the 4.5 million Caribbean Americans nationwide, particularly in Tamarac.

The meeting featured a special acknowledgment of a new restaurant, Lavinia, which opened in Tamarac by descendants of a family that originally operated a bodega in Mantas, Cuba, since 1959. This establishment not only brings traditional Cuban cuisine to the area but also honors the family's culinary legacy. The restaurant's chef is a grandnephew of the original delivery man for the bodega, while the maitre d' is the granddaughter of one of the original partners, showcasing a deep connection to their heritage.

Mayor Gomez encouraged residents to learn about the history and contributions of Caribbean Americans and to support local businesses. The initiative aims to foster community engagement and appreciation for the diverse cultural fabric of Tamarac.

Additionally, Commissioner Marlon Bolton announced plans for a Caribbean Heritage Month Bridal of Honor Awards ceremony, furthering the city's commitment to celebrating its diverse communities. As Bolton approaches the end of his term, he expressed a desire to leave a lasting legacy by championing initiatives that honor the achievements of various cultural groups, following similar efforts made during Black History Month.
