An innovative collaboration between an elephant named Cindy and wildlife artist John Banovich is set to raise awareness and funds for elephant conservation efforts. The unique project, which features Cindy's own artistic contributions, aims to highlight the urgent plight of elephants in Africa and Asia.

The idea originated when Sally, an elephant expert at the Point Defiance Zoo, informed Banovich about Cindy's talent for painting. Inspired by this, Banovich envisioned a partnership that would not only showcase Cindy's creativity but also support the zoo's elephant program. "Good programs should be supported through things like this," he stated, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in conservation efforts.

Cindy's painting process is driven by her enjoyment rather than food rewards, showcasing her natural inclination to express herself. Banovich noted that while training Cindy to use the paintbrush was challenging, her enthusiasm for painting was evident as she continued until she was satisfied with her work.

The artwork will depict a narrative of elephants through time, featuring an old African man sharing stories around a campfire, symbolizing the majestic creatures' past, present, and future. Banovich aims to convey the dire situation elephants face today, including threats from poaching and habitat loss. "We have a dire situation on our hands," he remarked, highlighting the need for collective action to protect these animals.

The completed piece will be auctioned at a safari club event in Las Vegas, with proceeds benefiting both the safari club and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Banovich sees this collaboration as a way to unite different groups—sportsmen and conservationists—toward a common goal of preserving wildlife.
