The Canton Township Board of Trustees convened on June 10, 2025, to discuss several key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the community's public services. The meeting focused on improvements to the water system and pedestrian pathways, with significant financial commitments proposed.
The first item on the agenda addressed the need for improvements to the public water system. Municipal services identified a critical gap in the water supply along Ridge Road from Joy to Guide. To address this, engineering services requested a purchase order of $70,000 for the Mannequin Smith Group to provide professional construction engineering services as part of the 2025 water main capital improvement plan. John, a representative from engineering services, noted that this project was identified through a water model analysis conducted by OHM. While a contractor has not yet been selected due to pending permits from Wayne County and EGLE, the engineering phase is complete, allowing the project to move forward.
Following this, the board considered awarding a purchase order for sidewalk gap and bridge design. A motion was made to approve a purchase order to Fishbeck for $589,220, which includes a budget amendment for design and construction administrative services for two pedestrian bridges and 42 sidewalk gap locations. The breakdown of costs includes $453,420 for sidewalk design and $135,800 for the pedestrian bridges, which are strategically located near schools and places of worship. John emphasized the importance of this project, stating it addresses remaining gaps in pedestrian access around educational institutions.
During the discussion, board members raised questions regarding the coverage of the proposed sidewalks, particularly in relation to high school and elementary school areas. It was confirmed that the planned improvements would encompass all school levels and nearby places of worship. However, some specific locations, such as gaps on Beck Road, were noted as not being included in the current plans due to their proximity to the Pheasant Run Golf Course.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on the importance of these infrastructure projects, which are primarily funded through grant dollars, ensuring that the township continues to enhance public safety and accessibility for its residents. The board's commitment to these initiatives reflects a proactive approach to community development and infrastructure improvement.
