Scottsdale Food Bank expands to new McKellips location enhancing community support

The Scottsdale Food Bank's recent expansion took center stage at the City Council meeting on June 10, 2025, highlighting its new location and enhanced services aimed at supporting vulnerable community members. Kira Peters, Senior Director of Library and Human Services, and Sue Oh, Human Services Manager, presented the updates, emphasizing the need for more space as the food bank had outgrown its previous site at Vista Del Camino Community Center after 47 years.

The new facility, located at McKellips and Miller Road, allows for a broader range of services, including fresh produce, protein, dairy, hygiene products, and even pet food for those in need. The food bank also runs programs like Healthy Packs for food-insecure children in the Scottsdale Unified School District and a brown bag program for seniors at the Granite Reef Senior Center.

Statistics shared during the presentation revealed that, as of March 2025, the food bank served 533 households, providing approximately $596,000 worth of food assistance. The operation relies heavily on community donations, with 435,000 pounds of food valued at around $972,000 rescued and distributed last year.

Council members praised the expansion and the food bank's efforts to address food insecurity, with discussions around future initiatives, including a trolley service to help residents access the new location. The meeting underscored the importance of community support and collaboration in tackling the growing need for food assistance in Scottsdale.
