The Bexar County Commissioners Court held a significant meeting on June 10, 2025, where they proclaimed June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need to address the growing issue of elder abuse in the community. The proclamation emphasized that elder abuse affects thousands of older adults and individuals with disabilities across Texas, with over 123,000 cases reported in 2024 alone. The court urged residents to work together to prevent and report such abuse, recognizing it as a community-wide concern that transcends cultural and economic boundaries.
During the meeting, representatives from Adult Protective Services expressed gratitude for the county's commitment to raising awareness about elder abuse. They noted that the high number of reported cases reflects a community that is engaged and concerned for its vulnerable members. The representatives also highlighted ongoing efforts to establish a senior justice assessment center in Bexar County, which aims to integrate law enforcement and community resources to better protect older adults.
In addition to the elder abuse proclamation, the court celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of Haven for Hope, an organization dedicated to addressing homelessness in San Antonio and Bexar County. The court recognized Haven for Hope's innovative approach to providing comprehensive care and support services, which have transformed the lives of over 53,000 individuals since its inception. The interim president and CEO of Haven for Hope, Jackie Bush, thanked the county for its support and emphasized the importance of community partnerships in tackling homelessness.
The meeting underscored the county's commitment to protecting its most vulnerable residents, whether they are older adults facing abuse or individuals experiencing homelessness. As Bexar County continues to address these pressing issues, the collaboration between government agencies, community organizations, and residents remains crucial in fostering a safer and more supportive environment for all.
