The Butte County Board of Supervisors has officially declared June 2025 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, with June 15 designated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This resolution highlights the urgent need to address the rising concerns surrounding the abuse of older and dependent adults in the community.
During the meeting, officials emphasized that elder abuse is a serious issue affecting many residents, with reports of physical, emotional, and financial abuse occurring daily. Alarmingly, the National Center on Elder Abuse indicates that one in ten older adults living in the community experiences some form of abuse each year, and many cases go unreported—estimates suggest that only one in 24 incidents is documented.
Tiffany Rowe, Director of Employment and Social Services, underscored the importance of recognizing the signs of abuse and the need for supportive services. With 24% of Butte County residents aged 60 or older, many face significant health and economic vulnerabilities. Rowe noted that over 40% of elder adult households live alone, which increases the risk of social isolation—a key factor contributing to elder abuse.
The Board's resolution aligns with California's Master Plan on Aging, which aims to improve the quality of life for all age groups. By fostering collaboration among local departments and community partners, Butte County seeks to create an environment where older residents can age with dignity and safety.
As the community prepares for Elder Abuse Awareness Month, officials are calling for increased vigilance and support to protect vulnerable adults, ensuring that they receive the care and respect they deserve.
