Concerns over road safety and infrastructure took center stage at the Fort Pierce Planning Board meeting on June 9, 2025, as residents voiced their apprehensions regarding the proposed annexation and development plans.
Local resident Mike Befalco raised critical issues about the narrow width of Seneca Road, measuring only 18 feet 9 inches, which he argued is insufficient for accommodating large vehicles like motor coaches and trailers. "With my truck, which is an F-350, from mirror to mirror is 9 feet wide. If I got 9 feet, that gives us 9 inches clearance to pass each other. Ain't good," he stated, highlighting the potential safety hazards for drivers.
Befalco also pointed out the deteriorating condition of Bryant Road, which connects Seneca to the mobile home park. He questioned who would be responsible for repairs, noting the road's deep potholes and lack of mention in the annexation application. "We got pictures of it showing the deep potholes," he added, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Additionally, he raised concerns about the proposed road's dimensions and the required landscape buffer, arguing that the engineering conditions outlined in the approval documents may not be feasible. "It can't put a road there, in our opinion," he concluded, urging the board to reconsider the implications of the development on local infrastructure.
The meeting underscored the community's commitment to ensuring safe and adequate roadways as Fort Pierce continues to grow. As discussions progress, residents are eager for clarity on how these concerns will be addressed in future planning efforts.
