In a decisive move, the Overland Park Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny the rezoning request REZ 20 25 2 during their meeting on June 9, 2025. The motion for denial passed with a 10-0 vote, reflecting a strong consensus among commissioners. The decision came after discussions highlighted a preference for communication between involved parties rather than outright denial, but ultimately, the motion prevailed.
The denied request will now proceed to the City Council for further consideration on July 7, where community members are encouraged to register in advance if they wish to voice their opinions.
In a more positive development, the commission also reviewed a special use permit (SUP 2020 Five-ten) for a dance studio located at 6580 West 90 Fifth Street. The permit seeks to renew the studio's operation for a decade, building on a history of successful renewals since its initial approval in 2009. Staff reported no issues with the studio over the past five years and recommended approval, which was met with support from the commission.
Roxanne Higbee, the studio owner, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to extend her business's operation, noting that the request for a 10-year renewal was suggested by city staff to streamline the process. The commission's approval of the special use permit is expected to enhance the community's access to dance education for both children and adults.
