The Battle Ground School District Board of Directors meeting on June 9, 2025, featured a significant presentation from Alyssa Avachenko, the program coordinator for Teach 1 to Lead 1, a community-based mentoring initiative. Avachenko expressed her concern over recent levy failures but emphasized the importance of community support for students during challenging times.
Since its inception in 2016, Teach 1 to Lead 1 has been actively serving students within the Battle Ground School District. The program focuses on character development and leadership through interactive lessons, pairing classrooms with trained community mentors. These mentors engage students in discussions and hands-on activities, fostering collaboration and personal growth. Students also participate in community service projects, culminating in celebrations where they receive leadership certificates and affirmations from their mentors.
Avachenko shared impressive statistics demonstrating the program's impact. In the 2024-2025 school year, students in Prairie High School's applied psychology class showed notable improvements: 81% enhanced their social skills, 78% reported growth in academic self-efficacy, and 63% developed a more positive self-identity. Overall, 93% of participants experienced measurable growth in at least one area. Furthermore, the program significantly transformed students' self-perception, with 95% of participants reporting increased confidence and a stronger sense of identity by the program's conclusion.
Looking ahead, River Home Link has expressed interest in collaborating with Teach 1 to Lead 1 for the 2025-2026 school year. Avachenko encouraged teachers and administrators within the district to consider hosting the program, highlighting the commitment of their investors to ensure continued opportunities for students.
The meeting also included a brief acknowledgment of the positive relationship between the school district and Teach 1 to Lead 1, with board members reflecting on the program's successful impact in the past. The session concluded with a reminder of the importance of community engagement in supporting educational initiatives.
