In a heartfelt farewell at the Dallas City Council meeting, outgoing chair Narvaez reflected on his transformative tenure leading the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. As he prepares to step down, Narvaez expressed gratitude for the support he received from the mayor and his colleagues, emphasizing the significant strides made in the city’s transportation landscape.
“Together, we have brought in nearly $1 billion in transportation and infrastructure grants,” Narvaez noted, highlighting the achievements that have positioned Dallas as a leader in air travel, with DFW Airport now recognized as the busiest in the world and Dallas Love Field earning accolades as the best medium-sized airport in the nation.
Narvaez also pointed to the city’s renewed commitment to street maintenance, which has seen full funding for three out of the last four budgets. “We’ve improved streets astronomically across the city,” he stated, while acknowledging that the journey is far from over. “You don’t go decades without doing maintenance and think it can be fixed overnight.”
The meeting also celebrated the launch of new initiatives aimed at enhancing safety and connectivity, including a comprehensive bike plan and the Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities. Narvaez proudly mentioned the groundbreaking of Harold Simmons Park, a project he once thought impossible during his time on the council.
As the meeting concluded, city staff and fellow council members expressed their appreciation for Narvaez’s leadership and dedication. “Your guidance has been instrumental in advancing transportation projects,” remarked an assistant city manager, underscoring the collaborative spirit that has characterized Narvaez’s tenure.
With a mix of nostalgia and optimism, Narvaez’s farewell serves as a reminder of the progress made in Dallas and the work that lies ahead. As new council members prepare to take their seats, the discussions on transportation and infrastructure will continue, shaping the future of the city for years to come.
