The City of Indianola Board of Adjustments has recommended the approval of a new wireless telecommunications facility, which aims to enhance cell coverage in an area currently identified as having poor service. The proposed monopole tower will be located at the southwest corner of a property near Highway 92, strategically positioned to accommodate up to three carriers without the need for additional towers in the vicinity.
During the meeting on June 4, 2025, city officials highlighted that the tower's installation is expected to improve coverage significantly, transforming the area from "bad" to "good" service. The facility will not increase traffic, as technicians will only visit the site once a month for maintenance, and it will not contribute to stormwater issues.
Currently, Indianola lacks an ordinance regulating cell phone tower sites, which has led to the need for a special use permit for this project. The structural integrity of the tower has been confirmed by a structural engineer, ensuring it can withstand wind speeds of up to 110 miles per hour. In the event of a failure, the design allows the tower to collapse inward, minimizing risks to surrounding properties.
Despite the positive outlook from city staff, some community members expressed concerns regarding the visual impact of the tower. Residents from nearby properties voiced their opposition, citing worries about the aesthetics of having cell towers in their neighborhood. However, no specific safety issues were raised regarding the tower's construction or potential hazards.
The Board's recommendation will now move forward for further consideration, with the expectation that improved telecommunications infrastructure will benefit residents and businesses in the area. As the city continues to grow, the approval of this facility marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity for the community.
