Pueblo West families will soon enjoy a revitalized Pixie Park playground, as the Board of Directors approved a contract for new playground equipment during their June 6, 2025, meeting. The project, which has been a priority for the community, was allocated $100,000 in the 2025 budget and aims to replace aging equipment that has been in place for over 25 years.
Curt Long, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation, presented the proposal, emphasizing the need for updated facilities that meet current safety and accessibility standards. The existing playground equipment has deteriorated and does not comply with modern ADA requirements. The new design will include features such as double slides, a climbing wall, a swing set, and ADA-compliant access, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for children aged 5 to 12.
The Board was informed that the contractor, Star Playgrounds, was selected through a formal bidding process, with their proposal coming in under budget. The project is expected to be completed by August, pending timely ordering of the equipment by June 13. This timeline is crucial to secure cost savings and ensure the playground is ready for use by local families.
In addition to the new equipment, existing structures like monkey bars and chin-up bars will remain in the park, providing a variety of play options for children. The Board discussed the choice of wood fiber surfacing over rubber chips, citing cost-effectiveness as a key factor in the decision.
The approval of this project marks a significant step forward in enhancing community recreational facilities, demonstrating the Board's commitment to providing safe and engaging spaces for Pueblo West residents. As the project moves forward, families can look forward to a modern playground that meets their needs and fosters outdoor play.
