Buncombe County Schools celebrated outstanding achievements and dedicated service during their recent Board of Education meeting on June 5, 2025. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Donna Edwards as the Bus Driver of the Year, an honor bestowed upon her for her exceptional commitment to students and the community.

Edwards, nominated by Doctor Wendy Hanna, assistant principal at the Progressive Education Program, was praised for her unwavering dedication and compassion. Her ability to create a welcoming environment on her bus, especially for students with special needs, was emphasized. Doctor Hanna noted that Edwards consistently goes above and beyond, demonstrating patience and kindness while fostering strong relationships with her students.

A notable example of Edwards' commitment was shared during the meeting. When Hurricane Helene threatened the area, she readily volunteered to assist with evacuations, driving through the night to ensure the safety of community members. This act of service exemplifies her dedication to her role and the students she transports daily.

In addition to honoring Edwards, the meeting also featured a celebration of student achievements, including recognition for participants in the Battle of the Books competition. The board expressed pride in the accomplishments of students like Hamir Bautista Barrales, Ben Becker, and others who represented Buncombe County Schools with distinction.
