Los Alamos County officials are considering a significant increase in the grocery receipts tax to bolster affordable housing initiatives. During a recent Health Council meeting, discussions highlighted a proposed 0.25% increase to the current tax rate of approximately 7.2%. This adjustment aims to counteract a decrease in revenues from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), which currently contributes about 80% of local tax revenues.

The proposed tax hike could generate around $7 million annually, providing a steady funding source for affordable housing projects. Council members emphasized that these funds could be leveraged for bonding, expanding the county's options for addressing housing needs. The plan would formalize the allocation of these funds specifically for housing, ensuring a dedicated financial stream for this pressing issue.

In addition to the tax discussions, the meeting also touched on community wellness initiatives. A representative noted the senior center's new program offering daily wellness calls to check in on members, reminding them about medications and meal sign-ups. This initiative reflects the county's commitment to enhancing community health and support services.

The council plans to revisit the tax proposal in August, signaling ongoing efforts to address both housing and health needs in Los Alamos County.
