Flower Mound is making significant strides in enhancing its parks and recreational facilities, as highlighted during the recent Parks Board meeting on June 5, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the application for two major grants aimed at improving local trails and parks.
The town is applying for a TxDOT transportation alternatives grant, which would provide 80% funding for trail sections along major routes, including a path from College to a local park and another through Kirkpatrick Park. Additionally, the Parks Board is pursuing a Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Grant worth $750,000, which requires a 50% match from the town. This funding will support the recently completed master plan for Leonard and Helen Johns Community Park, which has received positive feedback from state officials.
In other developments, the Parks Board celebrated the recognition of Rudasill Park, which won an award for excellence in design from the Texas ASLA. This accolade underscores the town's commitment to creating high-quality recreational spaces.
The meeting also addressed ongoing projects, including the completion of LED retrofitting at Giroux and Wilkerson parks, which will enhance energy efficiency and lighting consistency. Construction at Peters Colony Memorial Park is progressing, despite recent weather challenges, with plans for a new pavilion and retaining wall underway.
Community engagement remains a priority, with summer camps currently in full swing, attracting over 100 children weekly. The Parks Board is also gearing up for upcoming events, including the Independence Fest on July 4, which promises to be a highlight of the summer.
As Flower Mound continues to invest in its parks and recreational facilities, residents can look forward to improved access and enhanced community spaces that foster engagement and enjoyment for all.
