The Cheatham County Schools June Board Meeting held on June 5, 2025, highlighted significant community engagement initiatives and a heartfelt tribute to a beloved teacher.
The meeting began with a report on various charitable activities undertaken by students across the district. Notably, 35 pairs of fuzzy socks were donated to residents of Hillcrest Nursing Home, where students also performed a band concert. Additionally, the community contributed 300 articles of clothing, 16 complete Thanksgiving meal boxes, and 250 rolls of toilet paper to The Ark.
At Vantage Point, students organized Halloween baskets, Christmas performances, and Valentine cards for residents. A Thanksgiving food drive and a Christmas toy drive were also conducted in the East Cheatham community, allowing families to shop for free. Christmas caroling at Vantage Point included sending out 200 cards.
The district's partnership with Habitat for Humanity was highlighted, with Sycamore High raising $2,240.70 and students participating in a dinner and a build day for a family in Judah County. Meals on Wheels benefited from fresh vegetables and eggs donated by Harper High's garden, along with breakfast items and personal care bags prepared by students.
West Cheatham students hosted a veterans program at a local resident home, donating 43 hats and gloves, along with Little Debbie snack cakes and art supplies for residents. The South Cheatham Library collaborated with Kingston Springs to register 50 new families for library cards. Peagram Elementary collected 2,000 cans of cat food and raised $1,000 for the Animal Control Center through a Mother's Day project. Colby's Army contributed hats, gloves, and bottled water, while Riverside donated 60 double-bag suitcases filled with toiletries to St. Haven.
In a poignant moment, the meeting acknowledged the passing of Melissa Barr, a cherished teacher who worked at East Cheatham and Ashland City. Her impact on students and staff was celebrated, with a call for prayers for her family during this difficult time.
The meeting concluded with reminders for upcoming events, emphasizing the district's commitment to community service and support for one another.
