In a recent meeting, the San Francisco Commission discussed a new contract agreement with Mission Action to provide a school-based family shelter stayover program aimed at supporting families experiencing homelessness. The proposed contract, which spans three years from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, is a response to the closure of the Buena Vista Horace Mann Shelter.

Mission Action was selected for this initiative due to its proven track record in delivering similar services since 2018. The program will be located at Downtown High School in the Potrero Hill neighborhood and will operate from 7 PM to 7 AM on school days, with 24/7 availability on weekends and non-school days. This initiative is designed to assist families with children enrolled in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), providing essential services such as immediate shelter placement, restrooms, showers, food, laundry, and case management focused on housing solutions.

The program aims to serve up to 80 guests, supported by a staff of approximately 21 full-time equivalents, including safety monitors and case managers. The cost for this program is estimated at $80 per bed per night, reflecting the city's commitment to addressing homelessness among families in need.

The approval of this contract is a significant step towards enhancing support for vulnerable families in San Francisco, ensuring they have access to critical resources during challenging times. The commission welcomed questions and public comments, highlighting the community's engagement in addressing homelessness.
