The Dallas Park and Recreation Board convened on June 5, 2025, to address several key agenda items, including the approval of minutes and discussions surrounding a new agreement with a professional sports team.
The meeting commenced with a motion to approve the minutes from the previous meeting held on May 15, 2025. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved by the board members present.
Following the approval of minutes, the board moved to a significant discussion regarding a proposed licensing agreement with a professional sports team. The agreement includes a one-year renewal option and a three-year lease, with a total financial commitment not to exceed $3 million. The funding for this agreement is to be sourced from the convention center fund, subject to annual appropriations. The estimated revenue from this deal is projected to contribute $900,000 to the Fair Park special maintenance fund and $1.3 million for the athletic complex over the three-year period.
A notable concern raised during the discussion was the lack of lighting on five fields that would be utilized under this agreement. Board member Mr. Deaky questioned whether the fields could be negotiated to include lighting, emphasizing the importance of safe practice conditions for youth sports. In response, it was confirmed that there is a plan to use existing funds to improve the fields with lighting, with an estimated cost of $200,000 per field, totaling approximately $1 million for all five fields. Currently, there are about $400,000 available in the Mountain Fork Athletic Complex Fund, which would be allocated to light at least two of the fields, with intentions to address the remaining fields as funding allows.
Additionally, board member Ms. Hasbini inquired about a master plan for the park that had previously been discussed but not yet received. The board acknowledged the request for this information.
The meeting concluded with a focus on the importance of maintaining high standards for field maintenance and the need for continued dialogue regarding the park's development and funding strategies. The board's next steps will involve further discussions on the proposed agreement and the lighting improvements for the fields.
